There are several tests available to detect the presence of the Covid-19 virus in humans. Antibody tests are used to look for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.
There are a variety of tests available in pathology labs to detect the presence of the Covid-19 virus in humans. While RT-PCR, TrueNAT, and Rapid Antigen Test detect infection in the human body, there is a separate test that can be performed to determine if a person has had a previous infection with the virus that causes Covid-19.
This test is called an antibody test. Antibody tests are used to detect past infections and also the immune response from vaccination.
What is the antibody?
It is a substance formed by our body’s immune system to identify and fight foreign bodies such as bacteria and viruses.
This antibody attacks any virus that can harm our body. Sometimes a person who has recovered from Covid-19 infection takes up to a week to form antibodies. There are two types of IgM and IgG antibodies.
When a person contracts an infection, the first antibody produced is called “IgM”. IgM is usually the first antibody produced by the immune system when it attacks a virus. In a recently cured or infected Covid-19 patient, the IgM antibody can persist for weeks or months after infection. Many health experts have reported that IgM indicates that the person has entered the immune phase.
IgG antibodies are likely to show up later and may remain detectable for longer periods. These are considered to be the most important antibodies that protect the body from viruses in the long term. These antibodies are said to grow four to eight weeks after infection and decrease relatively slowly.
How are antibodies detected?
An antibody test, also known as a serological test, is done by taking a blood sample. It quickly signals the presence of the Covid-19 virus and is also cheaper than RT-PCR. The antibody test costs up to Rs 500.
Benefits of the antibody test
This test detects the presence of Covid-19 faster than other tests. The test is a bit cheaper than other Covid-19 tests. The procedure for this test is simple by simply taking a blood sample. This test is now also used for the rapid determination of the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
