In June 2021, Apple announced the latest version of their iOS operating system, iOS 15, which will be launched in the fall. iOS 15 includes unique innovations for FaceTime calls, distraction-reduction capabilities, a new notification experience, privacy enhancements, and entire redesigns of Safari, Weather, and Maps, among other things. Notifications in iOS 15 have been revamped, with contact photographs for people and larger app icons. A notification summary collects notifications for delivery at an ideal time and organizes them by relevance to reduce distraction.

Focus is a new feature that allows users to filter notifications and apps based on what they want to focus on at any given time. When a user’s Focus is blocking incoming alerts, their status in Messages is displayed to others. Using on-device intelligence, iOS will propose a Focus for certain times, like as work hours or calming down for bed, but users can also design a personalised Focus. Safari has an entirely new look. Controls are now easier to reach with one hand, allowing users to focus on the content of a webpage.

A new, small tab bar floats at the bottom of the screen, allowing users to simply swipe between tabs. Tab Groups enable users to save tabs and conveniently access them across devices at any time. Additionally, there is a configurable start page and web extensions for the first time. The Maps app now has a new 3D representation of cities with much improved details, including buildings, pedestrian crosswalks, bike lanes, and other features.

There is a new city-driving experience with better Transit features including pinned favourite lines, reminders to disembark, and AR walking directions. Voice isolation and Spatial Audio are added to FaceTime calls in iOS 15 so that voices appear to come from where the person is on the screen. FaceTime also supports Portrait mode and has a new grid view that allows you to see more faces at the same time.

SharePlay is a new function that allows users to share media in real time during a FaceTime session. In iOS 15, the Weather app has been revamped to include richer graphical representations of weather data, full-screen maps, and dynamic layouts that alter based on weather conditions also the Wallet app gains support for new key types such as residences, offices, and hotel rooms. Customers in participating U.S. states will be able to add a driver’s licence or state ID to the Wallet app later this year.

Memories has received a significant change in the Photos app, with a new appearance and an interactive interface. Memories now integrates with Apple Music, offering song choices for tailored Memories based on on-device intelligence. iOS 15 also introduces new privacy measures, such as processing Siri requests directly on the iPhone, which has the added benefit of better responsiveness, Mail Privacy Protection to stop senders knowing if an email has been opened and detecting a recipient’s IP address, and an App Privacy Report view to show how often apps use the permissions they have been granted.

There are dozens of modifications and changes for other apps, including Activity view, user-created tags, mentions in the Notes app, Trends, Walking Steadiness, and a new sharing tab in the Health app, a systemwide Shared with You feature for highlighting content shared in Messages conversations, and a new For All of You row in the TV app to suggest entertainment for the entire household.
iOS 15 is compatible with iPhone 6s and beyond, which means it will be launched this fall for all devices that can run iOS 14.
